Background
Drawing from her Latina heritage, her upbringing on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, and her journey as a trauma survivor, María offers a deeply empathetic and culturally sensitive approach to mental health therapy. Her personal experiences have instilled in her a profound appreciation for diversity and the resilience of the human spirit. Rooted in a love for cultural exploration and the arts, particularly dance and theater, María integrates creative modalities into therapy sessions to facilitate healing and self-expression. Through working together, she aims to create a safe and supportive space where you can explore your experiences, cultivate resilience, and embark on a journey towards healing and growth.
Education
Education-wise, María holds a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies, specializing in Anthropology and Spanish Literature. In addition, María obtained a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Capella University, alongside a Graduate Certificate of Play Therapy. In 2021, she received her certificate of training in EMDR. María is also currently pursuing training in becoming a Somatic Experiencing Professional (SEP) through Somatic Experiencing International, and is obtaining ongoing training to obtain her Certificate as a Complex Trauma Professional, Level II. Her academic journey underscores her dedication to expanding her expertise and staying abreast of industry developments, ensuring she delivers the highest quality of care to her clients.


Experience
In terms of professional experience, María has been the Owner and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor at Transcendence Healing Therapy, Inc., where she oversees day-to-day operations, provides therapy, and ensures compliance with legal and ethical requirements. Prior to this, she worked in a community mental health setting, where she provided therapy to a diverse population, specializing in trauma, mood disorders, and children and families. María has also served as a Domestic Violence Advocate, providing support and resources to survivors of domestic violence and their families. María's extensive experience also includes roles as a Mental Health Therapist Consultant, Service Coordinator/Case Manager, and Community-Based Psychiatric Rehabilitation Specialist.
Commitment to
Community & Diversity
María's commitment to education and community involvement is evident through her past volunteer work, tutoring children in various subjects and assisting in grant writing projects aimed at improving educational outcomes for needs based students and classrooms. Her international experience as an ESL/EFL Teacher in Japan and Mexico; and as a Language Assistant Instructor and Salsa Dance Instructor at Carleton College further enriches her understanding of diverse cultures and educational methodologies.
