About
María Flora Yates, MS, LCPC, SEP
(She/Her)

Background
Drawing from my Latina heritage, upbringing on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, and personal journey as a trauma survivor, I offer a deeply empathetic and culturally attuned approach to mental health therapy. My lived experience has fostered a profound appreciation for diversity, resilience, and the healing power of connection. Grounded in a love for culture and the arts—particularly dance and theater—I often integrate creative and expressive modalities into my sessions, supporting clients in reconnecting with their bodies, emotions, and sense of self. My goal is to create a safe, compassionate, and empowering space where you can explore your experiences, cultivate resilience, and move toward healing and growth.
Education
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies, with concentrations in Anthropology and Spanish Literature, and a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Capella University. I also earned a Graduate Certificate in Play Therapy and completed Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) training in 2021.
As a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP), I completed advanced training through Somatic Experiencing International. This body-based trauma resolution approach is central to my integrative framework, helping clients safely release the effects of stress and trauma stored in the body. I continue to expand my expertise through ongoing education, including ongoing in depth training in somatic therapy modalities.

Experience
I am the Owner and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor at Transcendence Healing Therapy, Inc., where I provide trauma-informed therapy to adolescents, adults, and families, while overseeing the practice’s daily operations and ethical standards. My professional background includes work in community mental health, where I supported individuals and families navigating trauma, mood disorders, and life transitions.
Earlier in my career, I served as a Domestic Violence Advocate, providing advocacy, crisis intervention, and resources to survivors and their families. I have also worked as a Mental Health Therapist Consultant, Service Coordinator/Case Manager, and Community-Based Psychiatric Rehabilitation Specialist, giving me a broad understanding of the systems that impact individual and collective healing.
Commitment to
Community & Diversity
My dedication to education and community engagement extends beyond the therapy room. I’ve volunteered tutoring children in academic subjects and supported grant-writing initiatives to improve educational access for underserved classrooms. My international experience as an ESL/EFL Teacher in Japan and Mexico, as well as my work as a Language Assistant Instructor and Salsa Dance Instructor at Carleton College, have deepened my appreciation for cultural exchange, creative learning, and the power of movement in personal expression and healing.
